  • Oil loses momentum and changes the tone for energy stocks, airlines, and utilities from the start of the day.
  • Gold and silver take advantage of the easing in expected inflation and bring the focus back to safe-haven assets.
  • Copper and gas provide the key clue to gauge whether the stock market is pricing in a cycle or a slowdown.

Brent

Brent commodities are falling today after Washington’s shift on Russia. Brent stands at $108.40, down 1.33%, and WTI at $98.15, down 0.88%, in Madrid. Reuters places Brent at $107.88 in the European session. 108.40 dollars and -1.33%.

Analysis. Here is today’s main catalyst: if the market discounts more Russian crude and products, the geopolitical premium eases and oil, refining, and barrel-related services cool off. The brake: the Middle East is still far from fully normalizing, and that limits deep declines. Watch whether Brent clearly loses $107 or rebounds above $109: that is where the tone changes for energy, airlines, and fuel-intensive utilities.

Gold

Gold rebounds as oil weakens and the Fed is less aggressive in market pricing. On Investing.com it trades at $4,186.92, +0.14%, while Reuters put it at $4,182.30 spot and $4,203.50 in futures at the start of the session.

Analysis. Less pressure from crude means less immediate inflation fear, and that helps the metal if rate-hike bets also ease. It benefits gold miners and safe-haven names, but there is a clear limit: if the dollar strengthens or bond yields rise again, the move loses traction. For equities, strong gold usually accompanies a more defensive than cyclical market.

Natural gas

Natural gas rises on Investing.com’s daily table to $3.169, +1.70%, although today’s news flow remains marked by weak short-term demand and mild temperatures in the United States, with Henry Hub references near $3.13.

Analysis. Be careful here: the screen price is holding up, but today’s narrative is not a clean bullish one. Mild weather and weaker demand weigh on the complex, so utilities, chemicals, and gas-intensive consumers breathe a little easier if the move holds. The bullish support comes from possible supply bottlenecks and any LNG export surprise. If gas does not hold $3.10-$3.15, the bias cools.

Silver

Silver follows gold and improves more in percentage terms. On Investing.com it stands at $57.735, up 0.75% this Monday, October 19. The move comes in a session of lower immediate inflation pressure due to falling oil.

Analysis. Silver has a dual reading: monetary safe haven and industrial metal. If the market prices in less inflation tension but keeps acceptable activity expectations, it can outperform gold relatively. That benefits precious-metal miners and names with industrial exposure. The risk: if the global macro truly cools, the industrial side stops helping and the advance becomes more fragile.

Copper

Copper barely rises, but it remains on the radar because it is a direct gauge of the cycle. On Investing.com it trades at $6.5783, +0.07%, while the PBoC today kept its one-year loan prime rate at 3.50%, with no surprise for Chinese demand.

Analysis. The fact that copper is not correcting more in this context is already a signal worth watching: the market is not buying a sharp slowdown in industrial growth. That supports miners, steelmakers, and manufacturers tied to power grids, infrastructure, and the energy transition. The limit is clear: without a new boost from China or a weaker dollar, copper may remain range-bound. If it breaks intraday highs with volume, the message for cyclical stocks improves a lot.
